Perfect Pebble: The Neuroaesthetic Science Behind Our Signature Mesh Tile Product

Perfect Pebble: The Neuroaesthetic Science Behind Our Signature Mesh Tile Product

You might call it a “splitting” headache—the anxiety that takes hold when you notice obvious divisions between sections of tile that are meant to flow together cohesively. Once you spot the imperfections, it can feel impossible to look away.

The agitation can be especially strong for experienced installers like Director of Technical Services, David Fatula, who instantly notices sheet lines and grout joints upon entering a room. His mind shifts to work, and before long, he finds himself analyzing the quality of the materials, the installation process, and how he might have approached it differently.

That kind of distraction is never an issue with Perfect Pebble tile. As the pioneer of the pebble mesh design and interlocking system, Island Stone & Tile has invested more time and effort than anyone in refining it.

“If it’s installed properly, according to our instructions, then when you stand back and look at it, every pebble will appear as though it were installed individually,” Fatula said. “I’ve had highly skilled installers tell me that Island Stone & Tile makes the only pebble tile where it isn’t necessary to remove the pebbles from the mesh and install them individually. They say, ‘Your interlock actually works.’”

What the ‘Ancient Brain’ Thinks

Of course, no tile installation should provoke negative feelings. Customers choose stone types, shades, finishes, and grout colors to create a space that feels inviting and sets the mood of a room. However, researchers are beginning to discover that some of our reactions to design choices are deeply rooted in the subconscious.

Neuroaesthetics experts describe an “ancient brain” within humans that is conditioned to recognize patterns in nature. It serves as a kind of defense mechanism, shaped by millions of years of interaction with our environment and designed to quickly make sense of our surroundings. When a pattern appears unfamiliar or out of place, the brain may interpret it as a threat, triggering a sense of distress.

As a result, professionals in the design industry are uniquely positioned to enhance well-being through their work, Science in Design Founder Mike Peterson concluded in a recent installment of the organization’s webinar series.

“So many of us have already known that we make people feel better, but now the science is there to document that we are an alternative health resource,” Peterson said.

The Natural Attraction of Stone

As a professional with over three decades of experience working with tile of all kinds, Fatula has always felt a strong, yet somewhat indescribable connection to natural stone. He wonders whether this stems from the fact that, throughout history, people built their homes using locally sourced stone, often quarried by hand.

“I’ve seen poorly executed artificial or imitation stone installations that just don’t feel right,” Fatula said. “By contrast, natural stone tends to feel more substantial and inviting — you feel more connected to the material. It has a warmth to it.”

Shannon Ggem, a California-based interior designer who specializes in biophilic design, has selected Perfect Pebble tile for projects specifically because of its authentic sensory experience. She notes that our bodies are deeply familiar with natural stone but don’t quite know how to interpret materials designed to imitate it.

“You might notice something subtle, like an unexpected temperature, or the way water interacts with it feels off, and the brain doesn’t like that,” she said. “It starts signaling that something isn’t right. Those primal instincts come into play when you try to use something that looks like the real thing but isn’t.”

Putting the Shore in the Shower

The surfers who founded Island Stone & Tile designed Perfect Pebble in part to recreate the sensation of stepping out of the ocean and walking barefoot along the shore. Fatula, a surfer himself, recalls the first time he experienced it while working at another tile company that had ordered and installed a sample in a shower. Initially unsure of what to expect, he immediately recognized its appeal the moment he stepped onto it.

“Those surfers were inspired and connected the dots in a way no one had before,” Fatula said. “They loved being in the ocean, they loved walking along the beach, and they asked themselves, ‘When I get home from a surf and take a shower, how can I maintain that feeling?’ Then it clicked—I can stand on what I walk across every day.”

Great care is taken to ensure the pebbles are smooth and comfortable underfoot, never jagged or hazardous. The stones are carefully gauged so that each tile maintains a relatively even surface, resulting in a gentle, massage-like sensation.

“They’ve perfected the meshing so you don’t get a toe-stubber,” Ggem said. “And that’s a common issue with this type of product—it’s a major problem with many competitors.”
