Our vision

We're Island Stone & Tile. We invented mesh-mounted pebble tiles in a garage in Bali, and we've been perfecting natural surfaces across ceramic, glass, porcelain, and stone ever since. Every piece we make carries a bit of that original adventure and a commitment to doing things the right way.

Our mission

We're Island Stone & Tile, and for over 25 years, we've been creating incredible surfaces the right way, while making it remarkably easy for you to bring your vision to life.

What started as a wild idea between surfer friends in Bali evolved into a manufacturer and distributor sourcing excellent materials; ceramic, glass, porcelain, and stone from remote Indonesia, working with partners worldwide to create beautiful spaces.

We invented mesh-mounted pebble tiles and continue perfecting our craft. But innovation means nothing without accessibility, that's why we promise to be the easiest company to do business with.

Real people. Straightforward pricing. Reliable supply chains built on 25 years of relationships. Solutions, not obstacles.

From that first conversation in Bali to today, we've stayed true to the adventure and genuine relationships that got us started, because doing great work should feel good, not complicated.

How it all started

In 1998, a group of surfers in Bali became captivated by a centuries-old tradition: pebbles hand-set into concrete, creating textured surfaces that were both beautiful and grounding. They wondered: what if this artistry could reach homes everywhere?

Stone mosaics were flat and predictable. The breakthrough was marrying that concept with hand-laid pebbles. The catch? They had no tile industry experience. So they experimented on a Balinese veranda with pebbles, glue, and mesh.

Through trial and error, they created the world's first mesh-mounted pebble tile, capturing handmade soul in an installable format.

It was a bold risk with no guarantees. But passion carried it forward.

What began as experimentation grew into Island Stone & Tile, changing how people connect to nature at home. Sometimes the best innovations are born from a simple idea, determination, and the courage to share it with the world.

None of us knew anything about the tile industry. We were builders and surfers who just thought we'd made something pretty cool. We started with six people hand-assembling tiles, built our first factory from scratch in Bali (basically a tin shed, if we're being honest), and learned everything the hard way, establishing supply chains from the remotest corners, literally sleeping in cars and trekking through jungles to source the perfect materials. Our first "big sale"? A strip of pebble tile around a Burger King in New Zealand. It's still there, looking great after all these years. When we initially tried selling to retailers, they said our product was "too new" so we went to architects and designers who got it right away. The retail side followed once they saw the demand building.

From the beginning, we never set out to just make tile. We wanted to create materials that designers could actually get excited about pieces with texture, movement, and soul. Every collection starts with curiosity and a hands-on approach, from selecting raw materials to obsessing over the final details. If it doesn’t inspire us, it doesn’t make it out into the world.

We didn’t grow by chasing categories, we grew by listening. Designers kept asking, What else can you do? So we explored. Stone led us to glass. Glass opened the door to ceramic and wood. Each material came into our world when it felt right, not because it was trendy, but because we knew we could bring something different to it.

We’re still deeply involved in what we make. We design with intention, work closely with our partners, and care about how our tile performs in real spaces, not just how it looks in photos. Our size lets us stay flexible, creative, and connected, and that’s something we never want to lose.

Do good work. Be good to people. Stay curious.

We believe great design comes from paying attention to materials, to process, and to the people we collaborate with. We trust our instincts, take our time when it matters, and build things we’re proud to put our name on.
